Emotions in control.

Hana-Bi. Takeshi Kitano. This movie has a special feeling to me. Kitano as a director has the same qualities as the actor. At moments he is calm and in control and at others he is not. There seems to be no real middle for him. The move between calm and action is what makes the movie work for me. The story is also bereft of any extra flare or Hollywood glamour and this makes it very good. I think the biggest thing I like about Kitano is that I would like to be in control of my emotions as he is in the movies. His face speaks more than a thousands words even if it is half paralyzed. Hana-Bi is a good movie but you must be open to the way it is told and pace it takes, if you can, you will like it. (1997)
